EVOLUTION

Old & new versions of my most worn handmade charm necklace.

When I called my BFF Lizzy to chat about writing this post, she told me “You are allowed to evolve.”

Last year, I barely posted to the @BuriedDiamond instagram, and when I did, it was a source of stress. I wouldn’t log in for weeks, and then months. I was making jewelry, but sporadically. I felt like I was not supposed to post about travel, or my apartment, or sewing, or my own face. It’s easy to feel weird about that. I became discouraged and disconnected.

I got psyched out. But I want my online presence to more accurately reflect who I am. I sew my own clothes. I travel a lot. I design textiles for fashion brands and I make big, goofy jewelry. I updated this website and felt excited to see images of all the different kinds of things I make.

Sewing has been my ultimate therapy for the last year - it’s expressive, but there are rules. There is always something new to learn. And in my never-ending goal of hand making everything, it is extremely satisfying to wear a dress I’ve made, paired…

Sewing has been my ultimate therapy for the last year - it’s expressive, but there are rules. There is always something new to learn. And in my never-ending goal of hand making everything, it is extremely satisfying to wear a dress I’ve made, paired with all my own handmade jewelry.

In 2018, I set New Year’s Resolutions for the first time in years, and they worked! I stuck to them, and grew a lot creatively because of it. My resolutions for 2019 are going to shape this year, too. They are:

  • To sew all my own new clothes (except jeans & t-shirts, unless I want to make them).

  • To focus the Buried Diamond shop on handmade goods, with fewer manufactured items.

  • To share what I make in blog form (more photos and text), and to encourage others to make things through sewing pattern reviews, tutorials, and inspirational material.

To quote Lizzy again "January was your month of reflection. Now it’s time to take action.”  That starts today. I just finished molding a new charm set, and laundered a bunch of amazing fabric to sew in the coming weeks.

Oh, and if you need permission to space out from social media and the internet, consider it granted. Or if you feel weird about making changes in your life and how you think that might seem to others, know that I feel that way, too. I think it’s all gonna be ok. XO
